Dynamic Displays Part 1

Adorable concept display with antique desk
I had the privilege of facilitating a Dynamic Displays workshop at Clark College in July and it was a BLAST! Being able to build displays with partners and share ideas and new products is not only a great way to learn, but a great way to build teamwork.  We know that building displays can be hard, especially when you have constraints on time, staffing, or even creativity, so having a workshop where we can get together and put some ideas together helps us all.

Whenever we look at building new displays or tweaking existing ones, we always want to keep the displays feel in mind.  No, not the displays feelings, because we don't care about it's feelings.  How the display makes us feel, however, is most important.  Many of our impulse shoppers are triggered into sales by somethings importance, shininess or how it makes them feel.

If you have glass fixtures to merchandise on....don't cover the tops of the fixtures with product.  How does the light shine through onto all of those goodies you have below if you block all of the light from coming in?  It doesn't; it successfully makes your display look dark and dated.  By cleaning up some of the merchandise, we can highlight products by giving them the light the deserve.

Not all displays can portray feelings, so having a color story or topic for the display is an excellent place to start if you feel creatively stuck.  Since I love props, I like to find an interesting prop to base my display ideas on.  One of the coolest props found at Clark College was a tree that was made from an old Microsoft display, wire and brown construction paper.  The large size and fun texture of the prop made for an excellent eye catching display!

Did you know that penguins live in trees?

Remember, that even the most mundane products can be made more interesting by placement, grouping and context.  For example, we took many of the penguins off of this display so that more light could come in and the customer wasn't so overwhelmed by the penguin-y goodness.  By taking some of the glass items and putting them under the glass of these adorable mini cake trays, the penguins were more appealing and well...tasty looking!

Use movement to draw the eye to new items like jewelry and accessories.

Cupcake tree makes penguins look cute and yummy!

Our members had a great time and I hope you get some creative inspiration from the photos.  Stay tuned for more Dynamic Displays brought to you by our awesome NCBA members!
